What a treat to finally catch Hubby Jenkins (The Carolina Chocolate Drops) live and in person at Pearl Studios here in NYC. Though resident in New York, Hubby is often on the road touring through the South performing early blues, old time ballads, and ragtime classics from the African American tradition.

Hubby brought us on a journey through classic piedmont guitar pieces by Mississippi Fred McDowell, "When the Train Comes Along," and even John Hurts "John Henry." We were treated to a history of the bones, from Egypt to the blues, and then some classic banjo instrumentals such as the harmonious "Lost Candy."

One of my favorite tunes of the evening was a traditional southern hunting tune about old man who promised his son he would catch a rabbit. In the American tradition the hunt is often unsuccessful and the sounds of the animals is replicated on the instruments. Hubby really brought this one to life. He closed out the night with a medley of blues tunes that included "Love Corrina," Thanks to Hubby for providing the Folk Music Society of New York with some fine entertainment and education.
